Course 33

Basic Technical Exploitation Course
A 2 week course designed for those individuals who are responsible for the technical exploitation of terrorist forensic material, usually experienced C-IED operators. It differs from forensic evidence examination as it focuses upon the technical aspects of the explosive device: construction, materials used, the viability and effects of the device. It is designed to increase knowledge and understanding of terrorist capabilities and how the security forces, and in particular C-IED teams, might counter them more effectively.
It builds on the basic forensic capability, showing how evidence is collated to support subsequent efforts that eventually lead to successful terrorist prosecution.
A full appreciation of this requirement is fundamental to C-IED operations. The course will be conducted in both the classroom, and practical outdoor environments. It will require access to a small scale demolition ground (5kg Explosive limit) if conducted at a clients location. The course will be assessed by written, oral and practical testing. Success on this course will lead to an individual capable of basic and safe technical exploitation of terrorist forensic material, under supervision of an advanced technical exploitation officer.
